Kathmandu, October 24 – Rotary District 3292 organized a mass bicycle rally in Kathmandu today under the banner “End Polio Now,” raising awareness for the global fight to eradicate polio. Hundreds of cyclists gathered in the city to show their solidarity for the cause, riding through major streets to spread the message of polio prevention.
Nepal’s Health Minister, Pradip Paudel, inaugurated the event, emphasizing the country’s commitment to keeping polio at bay. “Nepal has been polio-free since 2010, but the global fight is far from over,” Paudel said during his address to the rally participants. He highlighted the importance of vaccination campaigns and continued public vigilance to ensure polio does not return to the country.
“Events like this rally are crucial for spreading awareness,” the minister added, thanking Rotary International for its long-standing efforts in the fight against polio. The rally also marked World Polio Day, a significant occasion celebrated worldwide to honor the progress made and reinforce the commitment to a polio-free future.
The cyclists, dressed in vibrant Rotary T-shirts, started their journey from Jawalakhel Chowk, making their way through key city areas, including Pulchowk and Maitighar, where they were met with encouraging cheers from the public. The event attracted a diverse group of participants, including government officials, health professionals, and students, all unified by the cause of eradicating polio.
Nepal’s Rotary chapters have been actively involved in global polio eradication initiatives, partnering with government and international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.
The rally concluded with participants expressing hope for a world without polio and pledging their ongoing support to the cause.
