The Nuwakot Solar Power Station, Nepal's largest solar power plant, represents a significant step toward sustainable energy development in the country. Owned by the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), this facility is located in the Nuwakot District within the premises of the Devighat Hydropower Station. Spanning six locations, the solar power station is an integral component of Nepal's shift toward renewable energy sources and supports the country's energy demands during daylight hours.
Construction Timeline and Challenges
Initiated in 2018, the Nuwakot Solar Power Station faced challenges that delayed its expected one-year completion timeline. Environmental studies, alongside the COVID-19 lockdown, caused setbacks to the NEA’s initial target to install 15 MW by April 2020. By June 2020, only 1.25 MW had been successfully installed, highlighting the impact of both logistical and environmental challenges on infrastructure development in Nepal.
Power Output and Connection
The solar power generated from Nuwakot is connected to the 66 kV substation of the Devighat Hydropower Station, helping supply electricity during daytime hours. The Chinese contractor, Risen Energy Co., is responsible for the station's operation and maintenance for the first five years. After this period, management will transfer fully to the NEA, aligning with Nepal’s goal of local management of its renewable energy assets.
Project Funding and Financial Support
The Nuwakot project, costing approximately NPR 4 billion, is funded by both the Nepali government and a concessional loan from the World Bank. The funding stems from a 2015 World Bank agreement to allocate $130 million toward solar energy infrastructure in Nepal, with $37 million designated specifically for the Nuwakot plant. This support underscores the World Bank’s commitment to advancing Nepal's renewable energy capacities, particularly to serve the Kathmandu Valley's electricity needs.
The Nuwakot Solar Power Station not only reflects Nepal’s strides in green energy but also highlights the challenges and collaborative efforts essential to expanding sustainable energy infrastructure in the region. As solar energy grows as a reliable power source, projects like Nuwakot stand at the forefront of Nepal’s journey toward energy independence and environmental resilience.
