Jhapa, 5 November,2024 - In an effort to protect Nepal's native ecosystems, Koshi Province has launched a campaign to control the spread of Mimosa pudica, an invasive plant species native to Central and South America. This species, which has aggressively spread across Jhapa and Morang districts, poses a significant threat to local biodiversity.
Research has shown that Mimosa pudica impacts both human health and environmental balance, affecting agriculture, forests, and residential areas. Its dense growth hinders sunlight from reaching native plants, impeding the natural regeneration of local flora and reducing biodiversity. Additionally, health experts have expressed concerns, noting that contact with the plant can cause skin irritations and allergic reactions.
To address the spread, local governments, community forest user groups, and environmental organizations—including ForestAction Nepal, Darwin Initiative, and various women's groups—are working together. They have launched an awareness campaign focused on educating the public, particularly women who play a vital role in managing community forests, about the dangers of Mimosa pudica and the importance of controlling its spread.
Experts emphasize the need for early intervention, advising communities to remove the plant before it flowers and disperses seeds. This proactive approach is expected to mitigate further ecological damage in Jhapa and Morang districts, ensuring a healthier ecosystem.
The authorities encourage local residents to actively participate in monitoring and removing Mimosa pudica from their surroundings to safeguard the environment and preserve biodiversity.
