In a historic moment at COP29, Nepal has introduced two transformative, Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded projects designed to bolster climate resilience and empower local communities.
With an eye on sustainable development and transparent climate action, these projects mark a significant stride for Nepal on the global environmental stage.
MaWRiN: Supporting Indigenous Resilience
The first project, MaWRiN (Managing Watersheds for Resilient Nepal), is a $9 million initiative aimed at enhancing climate resilience in Nepal’s Marin watershed. This project will focus on empowering Indigenous communities by implementing nature-based solutions, such as reforestation and watershed management, that are ecologically sustainable and culturally inclusive. By strengthening natural systems, MaWRiN aims to protect both livelihoods and biodiversity in a region increasingly vulnerable to climate-related challenges.
CBIT: Building Transparency for Climate Action
The second project, known as CBIT (Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency), represents a $2.84 million investment to support Nepal’s commitment to the Paris Agreement’s transparency framework. This initiative, with $1.65 million funded by GEF, an additional $1 million from Nepal’s Ministry of Forests and Environment, and $0.19 million from WWF, is designed to enhance Nepal’s climate reporting and monitoring systems. CBIT will build a robust framework for tracking greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to changing environmental conditions, advancing Nepal’s ability to meet its climate commitments.
Advancing Global Climate Goals
The launch of MaWRiN and CBIT highlights Nepal’s commitment to addressing climate change and fostering sustainable development. By investing in projects that prioritize ecosystem-based adaptation and transparent climate governance, Nepal is setting an example for global climate resilience and accountability.
These initiatives underscore Nepal’s ongoing dedication to sustainable development and climate transparency, contributing to collective global efforts in addressing the climate crisis.
