Chandrauta, Kapilvastu 15 November 2024 - The Nepal Municipal Association (NMA) successfully concluded its water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) governance enhancement program on Friday in Chandrauta, Kapilvastu, Lumbini Province. The event facilitated a platform for various municipalities to share and exchange insights on effective governance strategies for advancing water and sanitation services.
Presided over by NMA General Secretary Narulal Chaudhary, the program underscored the need for municipalities to prioritize both infrastructural development and environmental cleanliness. Kalinidhi Devkota, NMA’s Executive Director, highlighted that enhancing water and sanitation standards aligns with the association's goal of supporting municipalities in improving their local WASH governance.
The mayors of Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City and Rolpa Municipality presented their respective initiatives. Ghorahi Mayor Chaudhary and Rolpa Mayor Surendra Thapa Gharti showcased how their municipalities have implemented efficient water, sanitation, and hygiene projects that prioritize eco-friendly waste management and sustainable water usage practices.
The discussions further included a legal perspective on waste and water management presented by legal expert Kashiraj Dahal. Dahal emphasized the importance of robust environmental legislation to support local WASH efforts, addressing challenges posed by pollution and waste mismanagement, which directly impact public health and biodiversity.
With over two dozen municipal leaders in attendance, the event also brought together senior officials from the Department of Water and Sewerage Management, Lumbini Province’s Ministry of Urban Development and Water Supply, UNICEF, UK Aid, and other stakeholders. Their combined efforts aim to foster sustainable water management practices, reduce pollution in water sources, and support eco-friendly governance models.
The discussions concluded with a shared commitment to develop clean, sustainable urban spaces and protect water resources. These insights highlight the intersection between effective governance and environmental resilience, ensuring that municipalities play a proactive role in Nepal’s ongoing pursuit of sustainable development and ecological stewardship.
