Kathmandu, November 30, 2024 – GeoMandu 2024, Nepal’s largest geotechnical conference, concluded successfully at the Radisson Hotel, Kathmandu, bringing together over 500 participants from 22 countries, including 150 international delegates. The two-day event showcased Nepal's leadership in sustainable geotechnical engineering and disaster resilience.
The conference opened with an inaugural ceremony graced by Hon’ble Prakash Man Singh, Deputy Prime Minister of Nepal, who emphasized the role of geotechnics in disaster risk reduction. Guest of Honour Dr. Marc Ballouz, President of ISSMGE, and Prof. Dr. Keh Jian Shau, ISSMGE VP for Asia, commended Nepal’s progress in sustainable infrastructure development.
Day One featured 8 keynote lectures, 10 distinguished lectures, and 46 oral presentations, addressing global challenges and innovative geotechnical solutions.
Day Two highlighted transformative ideas and groundbreaking initiatives, including 7 keynote and 7 distinguished lectures, along with 45 oral presentations and 36 poster presentations. The Heritage Time Capsule Session envisioned geohazard risk management strategies for Asia by 2075.
A key outcome of the conference was the formation of the Association of Geotechnical Societies of South Asia (AGSSA), a regional collaboration platform. In the closing ceremony, Hon’ble Ramesh Lekhak, Minister for Home Affairs, stressed the importance of disaster-resilient infrastructure to secure Nepal’s future.
GeoMandu 2024 underscored Nepal’s pivotal role in advancing geotechnical sciences and fostering global partnerships. The announcement of GeoMandu 2026 promises continued momentum in addressing critical challenges in sustainable development.
