Nepal's Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, held a high-level meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, at the UN headquarters in New York on Saturday evening. The discussion took place on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where global leaders are gathered to address critical international issues.
Prime Minister Oli is attending the annual UNGA summit to represent Nepal, with a focus on environmental sustainability, climate change, and sustainable development goals (SDGs). During his meeting with Secretary-General Guterres, the leaders are believed to have discussed Nepal’s role in global climate initiatives, peacekeeping efforts, and post-pandemic recovery strategies.
Nepal has been an active participant in UN peacekeeping missions and has recently emphasized the need for more urgent international cooperation on climate issues. As a country vulnerable to the impacts of climate change—ranging from glacier melting to erratic monsoon patterns—Nepal's delegation is expected to advocate for more robust climate financing for least developed countries.
In his address to the 79th UNGA, PM Oli is anticipated to highlight these issues, reinforcing Nepal's commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience. Additionally, the Prime Minister's office has indicated that Oli and Guterres discussed regional stability and cooperation in South Asia, with Nepal playing a critical role in promoting peace and development within the region. The UNGA session, ongoing in New York, provides a critical platform for nations like Nepal to voice their concerns on a global stage and seek collaborative solutions for pressing environmental and developmental challenges.
