Kathmandu, December 7, 2024 – Nepal is marking Human Rights Week with a series of nationwide activities aimed at promoting accountability and addressing pressing human rights challenges. Over 50 organizations working on human rights issues across the country have joined hands to host week-long programs, focusing on inclusivity, marginalized communities, and environmental concerns. The National Forum for Advocacy Nepal (NAFAN) is leading the initiative in collaboration with civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The events are part of the lead-up to the 76th International Human Rights Day, celebrated annually on December 10.
Hira Singh Thapa, Executive Director of SOSEC Nepal, emphasized the importance of highlighting the rights of marginalized groups, including Raute, Chepang, and Badi communities. “This week is an opportunity to amplify the voices of Nepal’s most vulnerable populations, ensuring their inclusion in national dialogues on human rights,” said Thapa.
Murari Kharal, Secretary of the NHRC, pointed out contemporary human rights issues during the launch of the week’s events. He stressed the need for the government to be more accountable in addressing human rights violations. "We aim to create pressure on the government to prioritize the protection of rights, particularly for marginalized groups and vulnerable communities," Kharal stated.
This year’s Human Rights Week also places significant emphasis on environmental issues. Programs are focusing on the intersection of human rights and environmental justice, recognizing the growing impact of climate change and environmental degradation on human well-being.
The activities will culminate in a series of National Human Rights Conference on December 10 onwards in Kathmandu, where delegates from all seven provinces, including representatives from marginalized communities, will share insights and propose strategies for advancing human rights protections.
Bhola Bhattarai, Chairperson of NAFAN, remarked on the collective effort of rights defenders and organizations. "This week is a testament to our shared commitment to build a more inclusive, equitable, and environmentally just society in Nepal," he said.
The programs aim to generate actionable recommendations for policymakers, the NHRC, and civil society, focusing on strengthening Nepal’s human rights framework and addressing the unique needs of marginalized populations and environmental concerns.
