Air Pollution Challenges Along Prithvi Highway Expansion in Pokhara

Pokhara, one of Nepal's most iconic tourist destinations, is facing significant air pollution issues due to the ongoing expansion of the Prithvi Highway. While the project promises improved connectivity and economic opportunities, it has inadvertently created challenges for local residents, businesses, and travelers.IMG_20241210_103149-(1)-1733838521.jpgDust and Air Quality Deterioration

The construction activities, including excavation, road widening, and heavy vehicle movements, have led to the emission of large quantities of dust. The lack of proper dust suppression measures, such as regular watering of construction sites, has exacerbated the issue. Local air quality measurements indicate a concerning rise in particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), which poses health risks to the population.

Health Impacts on Local Communities

Local residents, especially children and the elderly, are reporting increased cases of respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis, and other lung-related illnesses. Health professionals in Pokhara warn that prolonged exposure to such conditions can lead to long-term complications.

Impact on Tourism and Travelers

Tourists traveling to Pokhara, a hub for trekking and adventure tourism, have expressed dissatisfaction due to dusty conditions along the highway. The polluted environment is not only tarnishing the city’s image as a pristine destination but is also causing discomfort for visitors.

Economic Strain

Local businesses along the highway have suffered as the pollution drives away customers. Restaurants, hotels, and roadside vendors are struggling to maintain their operations amidst the dust and noise pollution.

Community Concerns and Demands

Community members have raised their concerns to local authorities, demanding:

Immediate implementation of dust control measures, such as frequent watering of construction zones and covering debris.

Health camps and distribution of masks for affected residents.

Accelerated completion of the construction to minimize the duration of disruption.

Response from Authorities

Authorities have acknowledged the challenges and have promised to prioritize dust management. The Department of Roads has announced plans to allocate additional resources for mitigating air pollution in the construction zones. However, the pace of these measures remains slow, leaving residents and travelers skeptical.
