In a moment of pride for grassroots conservation efforts, Pema Pradhan, a dedicated member of the Jaubari Restoration Committee, received an Honorable Mention from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) on the occasion of International Mountain Day 2024.
Pema Pradhan and her team have been at the forefront of red panda habitat restoration, showcasing how women-led initiatives are transforming fragile ecosystems in the Himalayan region. Operating from Jaubari, a critical area for red panda conservation, the committee’s efforts have focused on restoring degraded forest landscapes and protecting biodiversity.
Upon receiving the recognition, Pema expressed her gratitude: “I am deeply honored to receive this honorable mention as one of the restoration heroes. This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our women-led Jaubari Restoration Committee to restoring red panda habitats and protecting ecosystems.”
The Jaubari Restoration Committee highlights the role of local women as guardians of biodiversity, addressing challenges posed by deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and climate change. Their hands-on efforts in afforestation and community engagement have made significant strides in creating safe habitats for the endangered red panda.
The honor from ICIMOD underscores the importance of inclusive conservation approaches in mountainous regions, aligning with the theme of International Mountain Day, which celebrates the resilience and environmental importance of mountain ecosystems worldwide.
This recognition also serves as an inspiring example of how empowering women can drive meaningful environmental action, particularly in rural and high-altitude communities where ecosystem restoration is critical.
