Kathmandu, December 19, 2024 — A groundbreaking National Policy Dialogue on community forests was held today, focusing on how Nepal's community forestry model can adapt to shifting socio-political priorities, enhance economic opportunities, and bolster climate resilience.
Organized by the Ministry of Forests and Environment (MoFE) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Federation of Community Forestry Users Nepal (FECOFUN), the event received vital support from the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF).
Community forests, a hallmark of Nepal’s conservation and rural development efforts, have been pivotal in promoting sustainable forestry, empowering local communities, and mitigating climate impacts. As Nepal faces complex challenges, such as economic transformations and the growing impacts of climate change, the dialogue underscored the need for evolving strategies.
Key discussions centered on:
Socio-political adaptability: Ensuring community forests align with Nepal’s dynamic governance structures.
Economic growth: Maximizing income-generation opportunities for forest-dependent communities through sustainable practices.
Climate resilience: Strengthening forests as natural shields against climate disasters while contributing to global climate goals.
The dialogue brought together key stakeholders, including government representatives, forestry experts, community leaders, and development partners.
"This platform reaffirms our commitment to sustainable forestry and empowers communities to lead the way toward a greener, more resilient Nepal," a representative from MoFE remarked.
With a rich legacy of community-managed forests, Nepal's innovative approach remains a global example of people-centered conservation. The outcomes of this dialogue are expected to guide future policies for sustainable and inclusive forest management.
