Tanahun – The Muglin–Pokhara Road Project (Western Section), part of the expansion of the Prithvi Highway, has witnessed a second deadline extension due to slow progress. Initially scheduled to be completed by Bhadra 12, 2081 BS, the project now has an extended deadline of Poush 16, 2082 BS.
According to Engineer Saujanya Nepal, the agreement for this section of the project was signed on Jestha 2, 2078 BS, with work commencing on Bhadra 12, 2078 BS. The responsibility for construction lies with Anhui Kaiyuan Highway and Bridge Construction, a Chinese company.
Despite nearly three years of work, only 34.94% of physical progress has been achieved to date. Out of the 23.91 kilometers of blacktopping completed, 5.45 kilometers are double-lane while 18.46 kilometers remain single-lane.
Challenges and Commitments
The western section, which passes through Myagde Rural Municipality, Shuklagandaki Municipality, and Pokhara Metropolitan City, includes plans for 11 bridges, of which only five have been completed. Additionally, efforts are underway to relocate pipelines and structures associated with 24 drinking water organizations in the construction zone. Agreements with the concerned organizations have been made, and the relocation is being facilitated by local consumers.
Earlier, the first deadline extension of 101 days failed to yield the desired progress. However, the construction company has committed to completing the project within this newly extended timeline.
Implications of Delays
The delay in the project has raised concerns about its impact on the economic and social connectivity of the region. The Muglin–Pokhara Road is a vital lifeline for western Nepal, facilitating trade, tourism, and daily travel. The slow progress underscores the challenges of large-scale infrastructure projects in Nepal, including technical, logistical, and managerial issues.
While progress remains sluggish, stakeholders hope that the renewed commitment and extended deadline will bring this critical project closer to completion, ensuring enhanced road safety and connectivity for the western region.
