Kathmandu, December 22 – A low-pressure system originating in the western region of Nepal is expected to bring colder temperatures in the coming days. According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, this weather pattern will likely result in cloudy skies, light rainfall, and snowfall, especially in the high hills and Himalayan regions of western Nepal.
Senior meteorologist Shanti Kandel has reported that the system's impact will be more prominent in the Karnali Province starting today, with conditions intensifying further on Monday. The system is anticipated to affect Lumbini Province and could extend to the Kathmandu Valley, albeit with reduced intensity.
“As the system progresses eastward, it will weaken, leading to minimal rainfall and slight cloud cover in Kathmandu. However, the western Himalayan regions may experience heavy snowfall, significantly impacting daily life,” Kandel explained.
The Terai region of western Nepal is expected to face a noticeable drop in temperature, raising concerns for vulnerable populations. Currently, partial cloud cover is observed in the high hills of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Karnali provinces, while the rest of the country enjoys generally clear weather.
The Meteorological Division has forecast scattered light rain and snowfall in some high-altitude areas of Koshi Province over the next 24 hours. However, fog and mist in the mornings are likely to disrupt road transportation, air travel, and outdoor activities in the Terai and Kathmandu Valley. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution and prepare for potential disruptions.
This follows the coldest day of the year on December 14, when Kathmandu recorded a low of 2°C, and temperatures in Jumla plummeted to -7.2°C.
