In a significant stride toward combating plastic pollution, the 11th River Clean-Up event at the Bagmati River in Kathmandu marked a resounding success. Held at the LMC 2 location, opposite the Kuleshwor Fruits Market and spanning the area between Teku Dobhan and Balkhu Bridge, the event saw the collection of an astounding 2,380.495 kilograms of waste.
The breakdown of waste collected included:
1,918.99 kg of plastics,
253.38 kg of mixed waste,
97.945 kg of low-grade plastics,
90.78 kg of textiles,
14.7 kg of glass, and
4.7 kg of metal.
This effort was made possible by the dedication of 109 participants, comprising 68 volunteers and 41 local community members. Their collective action highlighted the power of collaboration in addressing environmental issues and creating lasting change.
The event is part of the broader RIVER+ Project, funded by the Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia Project. The initiative is implemented by the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme, with support from the World Bank and implementing assistance from UNOPS.
The RIVER+ project is spearheaded by Biocomp Nepal, in partnership with People in Need Nepal and CLEAN UP NEPAL. Together, these organizations are committed to reducing plastic pollution and safeguarding rivers in Nepal and beyond.
Organizers expressed gratitude for the community's support, emphasizing that such efforts not only clean up rivers but also spark a wave of environmental awareness and action.
This initiative serves as a reminder of the pressing need to protect our rivers, ensuring cleaner water bodies for future generations.
