Kathmandu, Nepal – A landmark workshop on enhancing Loss and Damage (L&D) data sharing and integration for Nepal’s Disaster Information Management System (DIMS) was recently organized by Youth Innovation Lab in collaboration with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). The workshop convened representatives from local, provincial, and federal ministries, as well as line agencies and researchers, to address critical issues in L&D data collection and reporting.
Joint Secretary of NDRRMA, Er. Arjun Kumar Bam, highlighted the pressing need for standardized templates and inter-agency coordination to build a more resilient disaster management framework. “The challenges in managing economic and non-economic Loss and Damage data require urgent attention and collaborative efforts to ensure effective decision-making and policy implementation,” Bam stated.
The discussions delved into obstacles in data management and the development of indicators for standardizing L&D reporting across various sectors. The workshop marked a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to transform DIMS into a comprehensive decision-support tool that aids in disaster preparedness and response.
Youth Innovation Lab expressed gratitude to its study partners, including DCA Nepal, SOSEC Nepal, KMJS, CRR Labs, and the Environment and Engineering Research Center (EERC). Their contributions underscore the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships in advancing climate action and disaster risk reduction in Nepal.
As the frequency and intensity of climate-induced disasters continue to rise, such initiatives play a pivotal role in equipping Nepal with the tools and systems necessary to build resilience and protect vulnerable communities.
