Kathmandu, December 30, 2024 – Nepal is intensifying its focus on sustainable and economically impactful infrastructure development, as emphasized by Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Devendra Dahal. Speaking at the 22nd anniversary of the Road Board Nepal, Minister Dahal stressed the need to integrate infrastructure development with the nation’s economic growth objectives.
Highlighting Nepal's ongoing transition toward development, Dahal stated, “It is crucial to ensure that new infrastructure not only meets immediate needs but also contributes to long-term sustainability and prosperity. The government is prioritizing projects that directly impact livelihoods, revenue generation, and economic activities while addressing the unique challenges of Nepal’s diverse geography and population.”
Minister Dahal also called for immediate resolution of pending contracts under the Road Board and urged for more effective monitoring mechanisms to maintain the quality of road networks. The ministry is committed to ensuring that all future projects adhere to sustainability, safety, and usability standards.
Speaking at the same event, National Planning Commission Vice Chairperson, Prof. Dr. Shivaraj Adhikari, underscored the vital role of road networks in driving economic growth. He stated, “Well-planned road networks are essential for economic expansion. Investments in infrastructure must prioritize durability, quality, and long-term returns.”
The program also witnessed the release of the Road Board’s annual report, showcasing milestones from the past fiscal year. Board Executive Director Ganesh Bahadur KC emphasized the need for greater autonomy for the board to streamline decision-making and ensure efficient resource utilization. Former board members were honored for their contributions during the event.
With Nepal still in the developmental phase, experts at the event emphasized the importance of aligning infrastructure projects with sustainable development goals (SDGs) to ensure equitable economic growth and resilience to environmental challenges.
