Kathmandu, Nepal – On December 31, 2024, climate enthusiasts, policymakers, and youth leaders gathered at the UN House in Kathmandu for the "Post COP29: Sharing for Climate Action" event. Organized by leading organizations including FAO, UNICEF, and Youth Action for Sustainable and Eco Nepal (YASEN), the event served as a platform to reflect on the outcomes of the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) held in Baku, Azerbaijan, and chart a way forward for Nepal’s climate agenda.
The discussions focused on a wide range of critical issues, including the engagement of children and youth in climate action, access to climate finance, and strategies to address adaptation, loss, and damage caused by climate change. Participants explored the implementation of commitments under Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and the Global Stocktake (GST), as well as sustainable practices in agriculture, forestry, and land use. The importance of gender equality, social inclusion, and the rights of Indigenous populations in shaping effective climate solutions was also emphasized, alongside advancing carbon trade and mitigation strategies under Article 6.
Key questions guided the dialogue, encouraging participants to reflect on Nepal’s progress and achievements at COP29, ways to harness these benefits for local communities, and the role of pre-COP preparations. The discussions also focused on how Nepal can adopt new approaches to ensure even better results for COP30.
Speakers highlighted the need for collective efforts, equitable policies, and localized action plans to address climate challenges effectively. The event fostered collaboration among various stakeholders, creating momentum for the implementation of COP29 outcomes at the grassroots level.
The vibrant event banner and posters, showcasing calls for action such as "Save the Planet" and "Justicia Climática Ya!," reflected the passion and urgency of the attendees. The gathering was a powerful reminder that climate action requires unity, innovative thinking, and inclusivity to secure a sustainable future for all.
As global climate strategies take shape following COP29, this event in Kathmandu underscored the importance of ensuring that local communities remain central to the fight against climate change, making Nepal a key player in the collective effort to safeguard the planet.
