Dhankuta, Nepal – Dhankuta Municipality has emerged as a pioneer in waste management and urban beautification, setting an example for other local governments in Nepal. The municipality’s innovative approach to waste management, combined with its emphasis on environmental sustainability, has transformed it into one of the cleanest and most aesthetically pleasing urban areas in the country.
Prior to the introduction of Nepal’s federal system, Dhankuta Municipality was twice recognized as the cleanest city in the nation. Building on this legacy, the municipality launched the “Flowers Instead of Garbage” campaign in 2017 (2074 BS). This initiative has become a benchmark for effective waste management, significantly enhancing the municipality’s visual appeal while promoting environmental sustainability and tourism.
A Blooming Transformation
A prime example of the campaign’s success is seen in Ward No. 4, near Salleri, where the road diverges towards the District Administration Office and municipal office. Previously littered with garbage, the area now boasts vibrant yellow Tikuma flowers, interspersed with red Lalupate and purple Bougainvillea. This transformation has made the location a magnet for photographers and tourists, further boosting local pride.
Mayor Chintan Tamang explained that the campaign focuses on using flowers to discourage littering while enhancing natural beauty. Currently, approximately 3,000 flowers have been planted across the municipality, with an emphasis on native species.
Public Engagement and Sustainability
The initiative has inspired active participation from local residents and neighborhood development committees, ensuring community ownership of the project. To sustain this momentum, Dhankuta Municipality has established a dedicated nursery. The nursery not only meets the municipality's needs but also supplies flowers to community groups and neighborhoods, fostering wider engagement in the beautification efforts.
From Waste to Wonder
The municipality’s strategy extends beyond aesthetics. Public spaces that were once dumping grounds have been revitalized into gardens and landscapes, contributing to environmental health and urban livability. Offices such as the Community Building, Urban Development Office, Health Office, High Court Biratnagar's Dhankuta Bench, and others are now surrounded by blooming flowers, creating an inviting and pleasant atmosphere.
The success of Dhankuta’s campaign demonstrates that innovative waste management practices, combined with community participation, can lead to sustainable urban transformation. Dhankuta’s efforts not only address waste management but also create a model for beautification, tourism, and environmental conservation that other municipalities can replicate.
This initiative highlights how a vision for a cleaner and greener future can turn challenges into opportunities, making Dhankuta Municipality a beacon of inspiration for sustainable urban development.
