Kathmandu University has unveiled a transformative new Bachelor of Arts program in English and Mass Communication & Journalism (BAEMCJ). This four-year program, offered by the Department of Languages and Mass Communication under the School of Arts, is set to commence in February 2025.
The BAEMCJ program integrates English language, literature, journalism, and cultural studies through a 120-credit curriculum designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, and interdisciplinary learning. By combining theoretical and practical components, the program aims to prepare students for diverse academic, professional, and cultural roles, cultivating future leaders.
"The program allows students to gain specialized knowledge in English and Mass Communication with a single degree," said Ekku Maya Pun, Associate Professor and Dean of the School of Arts. The program includes an extensive range of subjects such as British and American Fiction, Nepali Writing in English, Critical Thinking, Broadcasting and Digital Media, Film Studies, and Advanced Journalism Practices.
Catering to candidates who have completed high school (10+2 or equivalent), the program admits 20 students annually. Key components include classroom teaching, internships, project work, and a research thesis, equipping graduates with practical skills and intellectual growth.
Graduates of the program are expected to contribute to various sectors, including academia, journalism, corporate communication, government service, translation, and cultural diplomacy. Career paths include teaching, publishing, research and development, and consultancy, among others.
The Department of Languages and Mass Communication has a strong academic foundation, offering undergraduate and graduate programs, including PhD streams in Communication, English, and Nepali. Short-term courses on filmmaking, academic writing, and indigenous communication theories further extend its reach.
