The Baahrabise–Kodari Highway, a critical trade route connecting Nepal and China, is set to undergo major repair and upgrades, according to the Charikot Division Road Office. The project aims to address long-standing challenges posed by the region's complex geography and deteriorated infrastructure.
A comprehensive proposal worth NPR 4.46 billion has been submitted to the National Planning Commission. The proposal includes NPR 500 million for repairing the 28-kilometer Bandeu–Baahrabise section, NPR 2.53 billion for upgrading the 26.5-kilometer Baahrabise–Liping stretch, and an additional NPR 1 billion for landslide prevention and repair of 10 major sites along the highway.
Key Upgrades and Adjustments
Due to the challenging geographical conditions, the Division has recommended a maximum road width of 9.45 meters, with blacktopping and reduced road right-of-way to 30 meters from the earlier 50 meters. The narrower width aims to minimize environmental impact and ensure stability in the fragile terrain.
Division Chief Amit Kumar Shrestha emphasized that the proposed upgrades will prioritize durability while addressing safety concerns for travelers and trade activities.
Challenges and Local Cooperation
The highway project will inevitably impact properties along the road in key settlements, including Liping, Tatopani, Chaku, Baahrabise, and Lamosangu. However, local residents have expressed conditional support, stating they would cooperate if the government ensures fair compensation and waives outstanding bank loans.
The Road Division has assured that all construction and land acquisition processes will proceed through mutual agreements with the affected communities.
Significance of the Project
The Baahrabise–Kodari Highway serves as a vital economic and strategic link, facilitating cross-border trade and tourism. The repair and upgrades are expected to enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and boost economic activities in the region.
Once approved by the Ministry of Finance, the project will mark a significant step toward modernizing one of Nepal's most critical trade corridors, ensuring safer and more efficient transport for goods and passengers.
