Chitwan, Nepal – January 9, 2025
The much-anticipated Muglin-Malekhu road upgrading project, a critical infrastructure endeavor on the Prithvi Highway, is progressing despite significant challenges. This 39-kilometer stretch, a vital corridor connecting Nepal’s federal capital with key districts, is being expanded to enhance safety and accommodate growing traffic demands.
Initially, road work required vehicle stoppages during daytime hours. However, the project team has now managed to continue construction without disrupting traffic flow, according to Vijay Darai, Engineer of the Nagdhunga-Muglin Road Project (Western Section). "We are working on the project without halting vehicle movement, ensuring minimal inconvenience to commuters," said Darai.
Current Progress and Challenges
The project, initiated in December 2022, is being carried out under a three-year completion agreement. However, as of now, only 20% of the work has been completed. Activities such as cliff-cutting and constructing retaining walls along riverbanks are underway, with base and sub-base work for blacktopping progressing in areas like Kurintar.
The project aims to transform the current road, characterized by narrow and treacherous stretches, into a safer and more efficient transport route. Key features include:
Two-lane road (9 meters wide) in challenging terrains requiring cliff-cutting and retaining walls.
Three-lane road (12 meters wide) in uphill areas, covering approximately 1.5 kilometers.
Four-lane road (18 meters wide) in market areas such as Kurintar, Charaudi, and Bishaltar.
Six-lane road (26 meters wide) in urban centers like Muglin, Benighat, and Malekhu.
Despite significant progress in some areas, the narrow terrain and high traffic volume present ongoing difficulties.
Financial and Operational Overview
The project, supported by the World Bank, operates under a contract valued at NPR 4.8 billion. The road serves as the main gateway to and from Kathmandu, experiencing heavy vehicle traffic daily. Any delays in construction not only hinder economic activities but also increase hardship for travelers navigating the region.
A Road to Future Connectivity
Once completed, the upgraded Muglin-Malekhu road will improve the safety and efficiency of Nepal’s transport network, reducing travel time and enhancing connectivity. However, timely completion of the project remains crucial to minimize disruption for commuters and to realize the full benefits of this strategic infrastructure investment.
