Palpa, January 14, 2025
Preparations for the much-awaited Maghe Sankranti fair, to be held at Ridi Dham from Magh 1, have been completed. The fair, which takes place annually at the confluence of Palpa, Syangja, and Gulmi districts, is a blend of religious devotion, cultural festivities, and traditional commerce, drawing thousands of devotees from across Nepal.
Religious Significance
Ridi Dham, one of Nepal’s four sacred sites, becomes a hub of spiritual activity during the three-day fair. Devotees believe that bathing in the holy Kali Gandaki River during Maghe Sankranti cleanses all sins. Following the ritual bath, pilgrims visit the revered Rishikesh Temple to offer prayers and participate in charitable acts such as donations and communal feasts. These rituals are believed to free devotees from divine, ancestral, and sage debts.
Cultural and Recreational Activities
The three participating districts are set to host a variety of programs to enhance the festive spirit. In Palpa, religious hymns, prayers, and charity events are planned. Gulmi will host grand cultural performances organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Ruru Friends Club, aiming to entertain visitors while promoting local art and traditions. Syangja, on the other hand, has organized a Ward Chair Cup volleyball tournament, adding a sporty flavor to the celebrations.
A Marketplace of Tradition
The fair is not just a religious event but also a marketplace for traditional and locally-produced goods. Sellers bring items such as woolen blankets, Dhaka cloth, shawls, and handmade crafts, along with agricultural produce like fruits, vegetables, walnuts, Sichuan pepper, and jaggery. These products highlight the rich heritage of the region and provide economic opportunities for local communities.
A Magnet for Devotees and Tourists
The fair attracts visitors from districts including Palpa, Gulmi, Syangja, Arghakhanchi, Rupandehi, Baglung, and even Kathmandu. The influx of pilgrims not only enhances the religious significance of Ridi but also boosts the local economy. Organizers have ensured that all necessary arrangements are in place to accommodate the large crowds expected this year.
As the fair approaches, excitement is building among the local communities and devotees alike. Ridi Dham stands as a testament to Nepal’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage, offering a unique experience that blends faith, festivity, and commerce.
