Kathmandu – January 22, 2025: Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, announced that the draft of the "National Artificial Intelligence Policy, 2081" will be refined and strengthened by incorporating feedback from experts and stakeholders in the AI field.
Speaking at a discussion organized by the ministry, Minister Gurung, who also serves as the government spokesperson, emphasized the importance of a robust and comprehensive policy to address the growing significance of AI in Nepal. "AI policy is a necessity of our time, so it requires thorough effort. We must ensure no crucial aspects are overlooked. A detailed and effective policy is essential," he stated.
During the session, Dilip Bhattarai, founder of N Hub, presented a working paper highlighting the potential future, challenges, and opportunities of AI. Bhattarai stressed the need for clarity and foresight in policy formulation. Experts in attendance underscored critical concerns about data security and privacy, urging the government to prioritize these aspects in the draft.
Joint Secretary and Ministry Spokesperson Gajendra Kumar Thakur shared that the ministry is now preparing to engage directly with stakeholders to finalize the draft. “Suggestions from experts have been gathered, and soon we will initiate discussions with stakeholders to ensure inclusivity,” he said.
Adding to the discussion, Joint Secretary Anil Kumar Dutta reiterated the universal relevance of AI policy and the ministry’s proactive efforts to make it effective. Dr. Shaligram Parajuli, an IT expert at the ministry, proposed that the AI sector be managed as an "autonomous body" to ensure its growth and independence. He assured that public feedback would shape the final policy.
The "National Artificial Intelligence Policy, 2081" is expected to address critical issues such as data protection, ethical AI usage, and opportunities for innovation, paving the way for Nepal to embrace AI-driven development. The ministry's commitment to inclusivity and transparency has raised hopes for a transformative policy that aligns with global standards while addressing local needs.
