Syangja, January 28: Farmers in various parts of Syangja, including Galyang, Chapakot, Bhirkot, and Waling, have turned to commercial potato farming, showing significant growth in cultivation areas this year.
According to the Agriculture Knowledge Center, potato farming in Syangja has expanded to 2,400 ropanis of land this year, a notable increase from last year’s 1,850 ropanis. “The expansion in cultivation areas directly points to a rise in production,” said Vinod Hamal, the Center's head. “There are promising signs that this year’s production will surpass the previous year’s output.”
To support the farmers, the Center has been providing comprehensive assistance, including on-site technical training, subsidies for seed potatoes, irrigation facilities, pest management solutions, and support for grading, packaging, storage, and marketing. These measures aim to make potato farming more efficient and profitable for local farmers.
Syangja has become self-reliant in producing various types of seed potatoes, which are even exported to other regions. However, table potatoes, which are consumed locally, still fall short of demand and are imported from other districts. “With the growing interest in commercial potato farming among farmers, production is expected to increase steadily, reducing dependency on imports in the near future,” Hamal added.
Farmers in Syangja have also made strides in adopting modern agricultural practices. They are learning to select high-quality seed potatoes, properly store their harvest, and actively engage in marketing. This progress is paving the way for farmers to independently handle their production and distribution in upcoming years.
Agricultural experts in the district have been conducting studies to identify the best potato varieties for different climatic and geographical conditions, ensuring optimal yields. Currently, advanced seed varieties like Janakdev, Khumal Ujjwal, Cardinal, MS 45, and Rosita are being cultivated, enhancing productivity and resilience against environmental challenges.
The increasing commercialization of potato farming in Syangja not only supports the livelihood of local farmers but also contributes to the district’s agricultural development. With sustained efforts and proper technical support, Syangja is poised to become a model district for potato farming in Nepal.
