Bhaktapur, Nepal – In a significant step toward enhancing the environmental infrastructure of the Kathmandu Valley, construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Sallaghari, Bhaktapur, is set to begin on June 12, 2024. The initiative is part of the Kathmandu Valley Wastewater Management Project, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under Loan No. 3000-NEP (SF).
The project, managed by the Project Implementation Directorate of Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited, involves collaboration between Wapcos Limited (India) and B.N. Consultancy Pvt Limited (Nepal) as consultants. The construction will be carried out by VA TECH WABAG LIMITED, with the project expected to be completed within 24 months.
Bridging the Gap in Wastewater Management
Bhaktapur currently lacks wastewater treatment facilities, leading to untreated sludge and wastewater being discharged directly into water channels. This has caused severe environmental and health challenges, including pollution of rivers and contamination of groundwater.
The new treatment plant is expected to address these issues by providing proper disposal of sewage, reducing health risks, and improving the overall environmental quality. It will also play a crucial role in preserving Bhaktapur’s historic and cultural heritage sites by preventing pollution in and around these areas.
Benefits for the Community
The treatment plant is set to bring multiple benefits to Bhaktapur:
1. Public Health: The facility will ensure safer disposal of wastewater, reducing health hazards for residents.
2. Environmental Protection: By minimizing the discharge of pollutants, it will safeguard river ecosystems and biodiversity.
3. Groundwater Safety: With Bhaktapur heavily reliant on groundwater, the plant will help prevent contamination and ensure a cleaner water supply.
4. Urban Livability: The project will create a cleaner, odor-free environment, improving living conditions for residents and enhancing the city’s appeal to tourists.
5. Economic Opportunities: Construction and operation of the plant will generate employment, contributing to the local economy.
A Step Toward Sustainable Development
The wastewater treatment plant represents more than just an infrastructure project; it is a vital investment in Bhaktapur’s environmental, cultural, and economic future. As rapid urbanization continues to challenge the city’s resources, such sustainable initiatives are crucial for maintaining livability and preserving its rich heritage.
