Kathmandu, January 29, 2025 – A high-level forum on migration trends and economic development in Nepal brought together leading experts, policymakers, and academicians at an event organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Nepal. The program aimed to address the future trends of migration and economic challenges in the country.
The event commenced with opening remarks from prominent figures, including Prof. Dr. Yogendra Bahadur Gurung from Tribhuvan University and Ms. Helene Fors, Chief of Mission, IOM Nepal, among others. Prof. Dr. Achyut Wagle, Acting Vice Chancellor of Kathmandu University, and secretaries from the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Security also addressed the gathering.
Prof. Dr. Biswo Poudel from Kathmandu University delivered the keynote address, focusing on the future trends of migration and the potential economic shifts Nepal might face.
The event featured a panel discussion moderated by a representative of Kathmandu University. Panelists, including Dr. Prakash Shrestha, Hon. Member of NPC, Dr. Padma Prasad Khatiwada from Tribhuvan University, and Ms. Manju Gurung from Pourakhi Nepal, deliberated on strategies to leverage the expertise, investments, and knowledge of migrants and the Nepali diaspora for the nation's development.
The program concluded with a summary and closing remarks by Dr. Khagendra Acharya, Associate Dean of Management at Kathmandu University. Participants emphasized the importance of integrating migration policies with economic development frameworks to address Nepal's evolving challenges.
