Kathmandu, January 30, 2025
After a long hiatus, Nepal is set to host the second edition of the Sagarmatha Dialogue, a global forum dedicated to climate diplomacy and action. The event, scheduled for May 15-17, 2025, aims to bring together global leaders, researchers, and stakeholders to discuss the pressing challenges of climate change. This initiative, led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, underscores Nepal’s commitment to raising awareness about the impacts of climate change on mountainous regions and advocating for international cooperation.
Focus on Mountain Vulnerabilities
The dialogue will prioritize the impact of climate change on Himalayan ecosystems, emphasizing the cascading effects on Nepal and the broader global environment. Despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, Nepal continues to bear the brunt of climate-induced disasters, including glacial melt, floods, and landslides. The dialogue provides an opportunity to highlight these challenges and seek global support for mitigation and adaptation strategies.
A Renewed Push for Global Attention
This event builds upon Nepal’s earlier efforts, including the historic Cabinet meeting held at Kala Patthar near Everest base camp in 2009, which brought international attention to the vulnerability of the Himalayas. The initiative paved the way for Nepal's active participation in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), where it has consistently raised the Himalayan agenda.
Incorporating lessons from the 2019 plan, which was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and political changes, the upcoming dialogue is seen as a renewed effort to cement Nepal's leadership in climate diplomacy.
Collaboration Across Sectors
Organized under the leadership of the Office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers, with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Forests and Environment, the dialogue will convene heads of state, climate researchers, private sector experts, and representatives from international organizations.
“The Sagarmatha Dialogue is not just an event; it’s a platform to amplify the voices of vulnerable nations like Nepal,” said a senior government official. “We aim to bring global attention to the disproportionate impacts of climate change on mountainous regions and secure meaningful commitments from international stakeholders.”
Strengthening Climate Diplomacy
The dialogue aligns with Nepal’s 2020 Foreign Policy, which identifies climate diplomacy as a strategic priority. The policy emphasizes advocating for the unique challenges of mountainous nations, securing financial and technological resources, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, during his visit to Nepal last year, highlighted the urgent need for global action. Speaking from the Himalayan region, he described the visible impacts of climate change, including rapidly melting glaciers and rising sea levels, underscoring the importance of collaborative action.
A Call for Accountability
The Sagarmatha Dialogue also aims to hold powerful nations accountable for their commitments under the Paris Agreement of 2015. While the agreement sets a target to limit global warming to 1.5°C, achieving this goal remains uncertain due to inadequate action by major emitters.
Nepal’s leaders, including President Ram Chandra Poudel and Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, have repeatedly called for climate justice, asserting Nepal’s right to compensation for the damages caused by global emissions.
Looking Ahead
The Sagarmatha Dialogue is a significant step in advancing Nepal’s climate diplomacy. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, the forum seeks to generate actionable outcomes that address the vulnerabilities of mountain nations while fostering global solidarity in combating climate change.
