Kathmandu, February 6, 2025 – The pre-event of the National Bamboo Conference 2025, held at the Himalaya Hotel in Kupondole, Lalitpur, brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders under the theme "Grow with Bamboo, Build with Bamboo, Let's Talk Bamboo." Organized in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Nepal and supported by Green Bamboo Creation, the event aimed to promote bamboo as a sustainable resource for environmental and developmental growth.
The event commenced with registration and breakfast, followed by an introduction session led by the Chairperson, Mayor Tirtha Raj Bhattarai of Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality. The dais featured distinguished guests, including Maha Prasad Adhikari , Governor Nepal Rastra Bank; Honorable Rupa Bishwokarma, State Minister of Forest and Environment; and other prominent figures like Dr. Rajendra K.C., Director General of the Forest Research and Training Center.
The opening ceremony included a symbolic act of watering a bamboo pot, emphasizing the importance of nurturing this versatile plant. Key speeches were delivered by Ex-Minister Ganesh Shah and Dr. Rameshwor Adhikari, highlighting bamboo's potential for sustainable development, climate adaptation, and rural livelihoods.
Eliza Sthapit, National Director of Habitat for Humanity Nepal, emphasized the value of bamboo as a building material, stating, "Bamboo is a good building material. We build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter." Her remarks underscored bamboo's versatility and its role in creating resilient and sustainable communities.
Session Highlights
The program included three main sessions:
1. Grow with Bamboo moderated by Shambhu Dangal, focused on bamboo cultivation techniques and its ecological benefits.
2. Build with Bamboo led by architect Anju Malla Pradhan, explored innovative bamboo-based construction methods.
3. Let’s Talk Bamboo moderated by Pramod K.C., engaged participants in discussions on policy frameworks and market opportunities for bamboo products.
The event concluded with remarks from Tirtha Raj Bhattarai, who announced details about the upcoming National Bamboo Conference 2025, set to take place in Diktel later this year.
This initiative reinforces Nepal’s commitment to promoting bamboo as a renewable resource for sustainable infrastructure development, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and foster green economies.
