Kathmandu – A significant water pipeline burst in the Babarmahal area of Kathmandu yesterday, causing widespread flooding and disrupting normal activities in the vicinity.
The incident occurred during horizontal drilling operations by the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) for the installation of underground power cables. The drilling accidentally damaged a crucial pipeline of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project, resulting in water gushing out uncontrollably and inundating the area.
The floodwaters affected several key government buildings, including the premises of the Special Court and the Kathmandu District Court. Vehicles parked in these areas were submerged, and nearby roads faced heavy traffic congestion as authorities struggled to contain the situation.
Local residents and commuters faced immense difficulties as water levels rose rapidly. The flooding disrupted court activities, damaged property, and caused inconveniences to hundreds of people.
Minister for Water Supply, Pradeep Yadav, expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of coordination between the NEA and his ministry. "The Nepal Electricity Authority failed to consult the Ministry of Water Supply or its agencies before carrying out the drilling. Such negligence has led to this unfortunate incident," said Minister Yadav.
Efforts to repair the damaged pipeline are currently underway, with teams working around the clock to restore normal water supply to the affected areas. The Ministry of Water Supply has assured the public that the situation will be brought under control as soon as possible.
The incident has raised questions about the lack of coordination among government agencies during infrastructural projects, with experts calling for stricter planning and communication to avoid similar mishaps in the future.
Ecosphere News will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on the restoration process and its impact on the community.
