Kathmandu, February 14, 2025 – Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has issued directives to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development to take immediate and effective measures to address the shortage of chemical fertilizers and curb the growing problem of black marketeering.
In a meeting held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, PM Oli emphasized the critical role of timely fertilizer availability in ensuring agricultural productivity and safeguarding the livelihoods of farmers. "The government cannot allow farmers to face unnecessary hardships due to the lack of essential agricultural inputs. It is the responsibility of the Ministry to ensure a smooth supply chain and prevent exploitation in the market," he stated.
The Prime Minister urged the Ministry to develop a comprehensive action plan that includes strict monitoring of fertilizer distribution channels, crackdowns on black marketeers, and collaboration with provincial and local governments to meet the demands of farmers during the peak planting season.
Agriculture is the backbone of Nepal's economy, with millions of farmers relying on chemical fertilizers to boost crop yields. However, recurring shortages and illegal price hikes have raised concerns among stakeholders.
The Ministry has assured the Prime Minister that immediate steps will be taken to address the issue, including exploring partnerships with international suppliers and ensuring transparent distribution mechanisms at the grassroots level.
