Kathmandu, February 20, 2025 - Nepal has taken significant strides toward sustainable forest management and climate action through a National Dialogue on Forest Carbon and Climate Change. Organized by FAO Nepal under the UN-REDD Project, the event served as a critical platform to discuss Nepal’s progress and future plans in REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) initiatives.

Key attendees included Honorable Minister Ain Bahadur Sahi Thakuri (Ministry of Forests and Environment - MOFE), Honorable State Minister Rupa B.K., and Mr. Ken Shimizu, FAO Representative for Bhutan and Nepal. Together, they highlighted Nepal’s strategic approach to forest carbon management, with a focus on resilience to climate change.
A prominent feature of the dialogue was the proposal to transform the REDD Implementation Centre (REDD IC) into a Carbon Management Center. This institutional shift aims to streamline forest carbon finance mechanisms, opening avenues for carbon trading and ensuring the sustainable governance of Nepal’s forests.
In addition, Nepal is advancing its Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems by developing a National Timber Resource Database (TRD). This comprehensive database will allow transparent tracking of forest carbon stocks, aligning Nepal’s efforts with its commitments under the Paris Agreement.
The National Dialogue emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation in tackling climate challenges. By strengthening its REDD+ framework and institutional capacity, Nepal is paving the way for global leadership in forest carbon management and sustainable development.
