Kathmandu, September 28, 2024 — Heavy monsoon rains have lashed Nepal over the past few days, causing rivers to swell and flood, putting lives and infrastructure at risk.
According to the latest data from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), over 340 mm of rainfall fell in under three days, pushing the Bagmati River to a dangerous level of 6.16 meters, exceeding the danger mark by more than 2.16 meters.
The torrential rains have caused widespread flooding, affecting both urban and rural areas. Rivers in many parts of Nepal are running perilously high, threatening communities and farmland. Kathmandu and surrounding districts are on high alert, as authorities scramble to manage the overflow and protect vulnerable populations.
Human Toll Rising
In addition to the growing environmental concerns, the human toll is rising as well. The death toll has climbed due to the relentless rain, with multiple casualties reported across different regions of Nepal. Flooding has submerged many homes and roads, cutting off access to essential services and leaving families displaced.Haphazard urban development, especially in flood-prone areas, has worsened the impact, making many parts of Nepal increasingly vulnerable to climate change.
Experts from ICIMOD have emphasized the urgent need for sustainable infrastructure planning and disaster preparedness to mitigate the risks posed by changing weather patterns.
Call for Immediate Action
Local authorities, disaster response teams, and NGOs are working around the clock to provide relief to the affected areas, but challenges remain, particularly in remote regions where access is difficult. The situation underscores the urgent need for climate adaptation measures, as unpredictable and extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to global climate change.
The government has urged citizens living near riverbanks and low-lying areas to remain vigilant and follow evacuation protocols if necessary. In the coming days, continued rainfall may exacerbate the situation, with the possibility of landslides and further flooding adding to the crisis.
Ecosphere News will continue to monitor the situation closely, providing updates on the relief efforts and the unfolding environmental and human impacts.
