Rukum East/Mustang, Nepal – February 24, 2025
After months of prolonged drought, the high Himalayan regions of Rukum East have witnessed fresh snowfall, while lower areas have experienced rainfall, bringing much-needed relief to farmers. The snowfall, occurring in the month of Falgun, has raised hopes for a better harvest of winter crops, including wheat, barley, and oats.
Farmers in Rukum East, who had been grappling with dried-up crops due to the lack of rainfall and snowfall earlier in the season, expressed joy and optimism. The crops sown during Kartik, which were at risk of failing due to dry conditions, are now expected to flourish with the recent snowfall.
Locals noted that snowfall used to reach 2-3 feet in previous years, but its frequency and intensity have declined in recent times, which they attribute to the impacts of climate change. Faster snowmelt and irregular precipitation patterns have become growing concerns in the region.
The snowfall has also brought a significant drop in temperature, reducing activity in the highland areas during the day. However, the evening snowfall has transformed the landscape, creating picturesque scenes of snow-covered settlements and hills.
In Mustang, heavy snowfall has similarly provided a boost to the agricultural sector. Farmers in the Himalayan regions of the district anticipate improved winter crops and replenished water sources, which are crucial for sustaining livelihoods in this arid region.
The Khinka Village area of Baragung Muktichhetra Rural Municipality in Mustang turned into a winter wonderland on Sunday morning, with locals describing the snow-clad scenery as stunningly beautiful. To ensure normalcy in daily life, armed police personnel in Mustang worked tirelessly to clear snow from the roads, facilitating vehicle movement in the area.
While the snowfall brings immediate relief and hope for a productive harvest, the changing weather patterns underline the pressing challenges of climate change. Farmers and local authorities emphasize the need for sustainable practices and proactive measures to mitigate these impacts on agriculture and livelihoods.
This timely snowfall has not only rejuvenated the hopes of farmers but also highlighted the urgent need for climate resilience in Nepal’s high Himalayan regions.
