Baitadi, February 28, 2025 - After months of dry weather, Baitadi and other hilly districts of the Sudurpaschim region have finally witnessed snowfall accompanied by rainfall since Thursday evening. This long-awaited precipitation has brought joy to farmers who had been struggling with insufficient water for crops and livestock.
Tilak Bahadur Mal, a farmer from Dilashaini Rural Municipality, highlighted that while there had been sporadic rainfall since October, it was not enough to support agricultural needs. Continuous rainfall and snowfall have not only relieved the farmers but also significantly impacted daily life. Locals have been staying indoors to avoid the cold, and the movement of travelers on roads has reduced considerably.
Baitadi’s main winter crop, wheat, had been unable to grow properly due to the prolonged dry spell. However, with the recent precipitation, farmers are hopeful for better yields. Devdutt Bhatt, a farmer from Ward No. 2 of Melaulee Municipality, shared his optimism, stating that the rainfall would benefit crops, fruits, medicinal herbs, and livestock farming.
Agricultural experts have also emphasized the benefits of the snowfall and rain. Deepak Karki, an agricultural technician from Dasharathchand Municipality, explained that the moisture retained in the soil would enhance its fertility and productivity. Melting snow will infuse nitrogen into the soil, providing essential nutrients for crops. Additionally, the precipitation helps control pests and diseases, contributing to sustainable agriculture and soil conservation.
The recent snowfall and rain have also increased water levels in rivers, wells, ponds, and farmland, ensuring an adequate water supply for irrigation. Despite the delay, the snowfall is expected to boost the production of apples, walnuts, wheat, barley, mustard, and other crops. Ramchandra Airi of Ward No. 3, Sigash Rural Municipality, expressed his satisfaction with the improved agricultural prospects.
Agricultural technician Mahesh Pandey from the Agricultural Knowledge Center in Baitadi further confirmed that the snowfall and rain would enhance soil fertility, control harmful pests, and improve crop yields. Farmers across the region are optimistic about a prosperous season ahead, with the recent precipitation providing a much-needed boost to their livelihoods.
The snowfall and rainfall in Baitadi and the Sudurpaschim region are a reminder of the critical connection between weather patterns and agricultural productivity. This development not only provides immediate relief to farmers but also raises hopes for improved food security and sustainable farming practices in the region.
