Pokhara, Nepal – In a significant step toward boosting tourism and positioning itself as a premier hub for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism, Pokhara is hosting its first-ever tri-nation tourism expo, NICE-2025 (Nepal, India, China Expo). The event coincides with Visit Pokhara Year 2025 and marks a milestone in Nepal's tourism sector.
The expo, which began earlier this week, has drawn over 600 delegates, including more than 80 international buyers, 70 sellers, and 75 exhibitors. With the theme "NICE for MICE and More," the event aims to elevate Pokhara's status as a top destination for business networking, tourism, and cross-border collaboration.
Renowned for its breathtaking views of the Himalayas, including iconic peaks like Machhapuchhre, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri, Pokhara has long been a favorite among adventure seekers and trekkers. Now, with its expanding infrastructure and international connections, the city seeks to cater to the growing demand for MICE tourism.
Exploring Nepal’s MICE Potential
Nepal holds immense promise for attracting tourists from neighboring giants India and China, two of the world’s largest economies. In 2024, approximately 317,000 Indian visitors arrived by air, and over 100,000 Chinese tourists visited Nepal, with even more entering via land. These figures highlight the untapped potential of the tourism market, particularly for high-quality tourists seeking unique travel and business experiences.
Entrepreneurs are being encouraged to capitalize on this opportunity by attracting Indian and Chinese companies to host their annual general meetings (AGMs) in Nepal. Pokhara, with its state-of-the-art hotels and facilities, offers diverse options for hosting events, from small corporate meetings to large-scale conferences.
Beyond business, the city provides a plethora of activities for delegates and tourists, including paragliding, bungee jumping, ziplining, trekking, and sightseeing in the serene Himalayan landscape. The city’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant religious sites add depth to the visitor experience, making Pokhara an ideal blend of business and leisure.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite its vast potential, Pokhara faces challenges in realizing its ambitions as Nepal's tourism capital. Air connectivity remains a major hurdle, as the newly inaugurated Pokhara International Airport is not yet fully operational due to route disputes with India. Addressing these connectivity issues is vital for ensuring seamless access for international travelers.
The NICE-2025 expo serves as a platform to discuss these challenges and strategize solutions. Organizers hope that such events will help drive Pokhara’s growth as a hub for MICE tourism, contributing to Nepal’s broader economic development.
As the city hosts this landmark event, the optimism surrounding Pokhara’s future as a tourism and business destination is palpable. With collaborative efforts, the lake city is poised to establish itself as a key player in the regional and global tourism industry.
