Kathmandu, March 1, 2025 - The current coalition government between the CPN-UML and the Nepali Congress (NC) will remain intact until the next general election, according to Shankar Pokharel, General Secretary of the CPN-UML.
Speaking at the inaugural convention of the Nepal National Hotel Entrepreneurs Association, Pokharel emphasized that the alliance was forged to ensure political stability amidst Nepal's ongoing challenges. He dismissed rumors questioning the longevity of the coalition, calling them baseless and the product of those seeking to destabilize the nation.
"The NC and the UML joined hands to ensure political stability, and this coalition will last its full term, no matter what detractors say," Pokharel stated. He reaffirmed that his party intends to contest the next election with strength and focus.
Pokharel also highlighted the risks posed by smaller parties that, despite being rejected by the majority, have often influenced governance through disruptive tendencies. He underscored that only strong and credible political parties can guide Nepal toward development and stability.
In an apparent reference to the repeated realignments of the CPN-Maoist Centre, Pokharel criticized smaller parties for their attempts to destabilize governance by sidelining larger parties that have the public's mandate. "People have decided that the major parties should lead the government, and the other parties should perform the role of opposition," he remarked.
The coalition was formed last year when the NC decided to ally with the UML after experiencing betrayal by other coalition partners, particularly the CPN-MC. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak echoed Pokharel's sentiments, stating that the coalition was carefully designed to prioritize stability and development.
Leaders of both parties have reiterated their commitment to maintaining the coalition until the next general election to address critical national issues collaboratively.
