Kathmandu, March 3, 2025 – A one-day workshop titled “Effective Restoration and Conservation of Biodiversity in the Nepal Himalaya by 2030 in the Context of a Changing Climate” was successfully held yesterday at the premises of the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC). The event was a collaborative effort between NTNC, the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), and the Research Centre for Applied Science and Technology (RECAST).
The workshop brought together national and international experts to discuss the pressing challenges facing biodiversity conservation in the Nepal Himalaya amidst the impacts of climate change. Key topics included the need for restructuring Nepal’s Protected Area System (PAS), achieving the ambitious 30x30 biodiversity targets, and implementing Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs).
Renowned speakers included Prof. Ole R. Vetaas from the University of Bergen, Norway, who presented on species and protected areas in a warming future, and Prof. Udo Schickhoff from the University of Hamburg, Germany, who emphasized the importance of climate-smart conservation planning. Additionally, Prof. Ram P. Chaudhary provided insights on Nepal’s protected areas and the connectivity of ecological corridors.
The workshop was inaugurated by NTNC Member Secretary Dr. Naresh Subedi, who highlighted the urgency of addressing biodiversity loss and climate change. The program concluded with closing remarks by NTNC Director Dr. Chiranjibi Prasad Pokharel, summarizing the day’s discussions and reiterating the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve Nepal’s conservation goals.
