Kathmandu, March 3, 2025 – On the occasion of World Wildlife Day, Nepal has showcased remarkable progress in wildlife conservation and sustainable development, thanks to the Terai Arc Landscape (TAL) Initiative led by WWF Nepal in collaboration with local communities. This transformative program has emerged as a global model for balancing ecological restoration and improving livelihoods.
Key Achievements of the TAL Initiative:
1. Forest Restoration: Over 66,800 hectares of degraded forest areas have been restored, contributing significantly to biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration.
2. Endangered Species Protection: Nepal has achieved a remarkable increase in populations of iconic species. The rhino population now stands at 752, while the tiger population has tripled to 355—a testament to the country's commitment to protecting endangered wildlife.
3. Community Empowerment: More than 500,000 households have benefited from livelihood improvement programs, including sustainable farming and income-generating activities.
4. Inclusivity in Development: The initiative has also focused on empowering persons with disabilities through specialized income-generating opportunities, fostering inclusivity in conservation efforts.
5. Climate Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction: Innovative programs such as forest fire management, riverbank embankment, and floodplain protection have been implemented to mitigate climate change impacts and reduce disaster risks.
This comprehensive approach demonstrates how ecological restoration can be integrated with human development. Finland, through WWF Suomi, has played a pivotal role in supporting the TAL Initiative, reinforcing Nepal’s efforts to create a sustainable future where both people and nature thrive.
The Terai Arc Landscape, spanning across southern Nepal, has become a beacon of hope for conservationists worldwide. By restoring ecosystems, safeguarding wildlife, and uplifting vulnerable communities, this initiative exemplifies the theme of #GenerationRestoration.
