Kathmandu, March 10, 2025: The Fifth National Labour and Employment Conference was inaugurated today by Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, who also declared the commencement of the 'Decade of Internal Employment Generation.' The two-day conference, organized by the Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Security (MoLESS) in collaboration with ILO Nepal and other partners, aims to chart a sustainable path for internal employment generation in Nepal.
The event, themed "Expanding Production and Productivity: A Sustainable Foundation for Internal Employment," has brought together policymakers, experts, and international and national stakeholders. Discussions will focus on identifying sectors with high job creation potential and formulating policies to promote decent employment opportunities within the country.
With 67% of Nepal's workforce aged 15-65, the nation faces the challenge of fully capitalizing on its demographic dividend. While foreign employment continues to play a critical role in boosting household incomes and contributing to foreign currency reserves, there is a growing realization of the need to channel the skills and resources gained from foreign employment into enhancing internal production.
The conference underscores the importance of expanding domestic employment opportunities to drive sustainable economic growth and improve livelihoods. The Government of Nepal has expressed its commitment to implementing recommendations from the conference to align with the goals of the 16th Plan, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the vision of "Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali."
Stakeholders at the conference emphasized the importance of robust policy reforms to tackle employment challenges and foster a more inclusive and productive labor market. The outcomes of this conference are expected to guide Nepal toward creating a self-reliant economy through sustainable employment generation.
