Pokhara, Nepal - The much-anticipated Pokhara-Muglin Road Project, a vital infrastructure upgrade for Gandaki Province, has reached 43.34% physical progress in its western section, spanning 38.88 km. According to the project office, 29.47 km of the four-lane highway has been blacktopped to date, with significant progress in both two-way and one-way paving.
Chinese construction company Anhui Kaiyuan Highway and Bridge Construction is executing the project under a contract worth NPR 7.40 billion. The road expansion is being supported by the Asian Development Bank’s loan assistance, underscoring its significance as a national priority project. Despite a target of completion within a year from its start on August 28, 2021, the deadline has now been extended twice, with the new completion date set for mid-January 2026.
Breaking Down Progress and Challenges
In the western section, 15.32 km has been completed with two-way blacktopping, while one-way paving has been achieved on 14.15 km. Engineer Saujanya Nepal of the project office stated that only 2 km of road in Tanahun district remains to be blacktopped. Meanwhile, in the Kaski section, widening, preparation, and blacktopping are actively underway.
The construction of bridges is also progressing steadily, with nine of the twelve planned road bridges in their final stages. Major ongoing works include bridge construction over the Bijaypur Khola and Seti River, alongside blacktopping efforts in key areas like Chauthe, Amarsingh Chowk, and Budi Bazaar in Pokhara.
Despite these advancements, local residents have voiced concerns about delays and inconveniences caused by construction. The slow progress has led to traffic challenges, including hours-long journeys on dusty and muddy roads.
Economic and Tourism Boost Expected
The Pokhara-Muglin Road is more than just a transportation route; it is a lifeline for Gandaki Province. The western section, connecting Jamune in Tanahun to Pokhara, will facilitate seamless travel between the province's tourism hub and other parts of Nepal. Upon completion, the upgraded road promises to:
1. Reduce travel time and enhance connectivity.
2. Stimulate tourism by improving accessibility to Pokhara, a major destination for domestic and international travelers.
3. Drive economic growth by boosting trade and mobility in Gandaki Province.
Half of the road section between Jamune and the Seti Bridge in Pokhara will feature six lanes, with the remaining portion having four lanes. The eastern section, spanning 41.45 km, is also nearing completion, marking a major milestone for the overall project.
A Step Toward Development
Once completed, the Pokhara-Muglin Road Project will transform the transportation landscape of Gandaki Province. It will replace the current arduous journeys with a faster, safer, and more comfortable travel experience. Local businesses, industries, and tourism are expected to thrive, solidifying Gandaki Province’s position as an economic and tourism hub in Nepal.
While delays have caused frustrations, the project represents a critical investment in Nepal’s infrastructure development and the future prosperity of the region. Engineer Nepal emphasized that the long-standing difficulties faced by travelers will soon come to an end, making way for a brighter and more connected Gandaki Province.
This landmark project is poised to redefine the region’s accessibility, underscoring the importance of timely completion and effective management.
