Kathmandu – In a celebration of International Women’s Day, UNDP Nepal, in collaboration with UNHCR, organized a National Poetry Competition to emphasize the themes of "Rights, Equality, and Empowerment for Women and Girls." The competition brought together young poets from across Nepal, showcasing their creative talents and dedication to advocating for women’s rights through poetry.
Mr. Kishor Acharya from Chandra Surya Secondary School, located in Shubh Kalika Rural Municipality, Kalikot, Karnali Province, emerged as the winner of the competition. His poem captivated the judges with its profound message and powerful imagery reflecting women’s struggles and aspirations.
Ms. Preeti Adhikari from Baidyanath Devnarayan Janata Model Secondary School, Dhanusha, Madhesh Province, and Ms. Anjali Lama from Secondary School, Kalakhola, Dang, Lumbini Province, were awarded the second and third positions, respectively. Both participants presented compelling works that echoed the core themes of equality and empowerment.
The event was held on March 7, 2025, in Kathmandu, drawing attention to the importance of gender equality and the rights of women and girls. Speaking at the program, representatives from UNDP and UNHCR emphasized the power of art, particularly poetry, in driving social change and fostering conversations around critical issues.
The competition is a testament to the growing awareness and activism among Nepal's youth. It also highlights the role of creative platforms in addressing pressing societal challenges while providing opportunities for young talents to shine.
