Kathmandu, March 12 – The Kathmandu Valley and several other parts of the country experienced rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds on Wednesday evening. This weather phenomenon, typical of the pre-monsoon season, caused disruptions in flight operations and raised public concerns about weather preparedness.
According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, light rain with thunder and strong winds was reported in various districts of Gandaki, Bagmati, and Koshi Provinces. The Division confirmed that the rain-causing weather system is gradually moving eastward. Meteorologist Govinda Jha stated, "The pre-monsoon period brings unpredictable weather conditions, including thunderstorms, lightning, and windstorms, which are characteristic of this season."
The impact was particularly noticeable at Tribhuvan International Airport, where reduced visibility due to rain and strong winds caused temporary disruptions in both domestic and international flight operations. Airport officials reported delays but assured passengers that safety protocols were prioritized.
The weather had remained overcast since Wednesday afternoon, signaling the onset of unstable atmospheric conditions. This serves as a reminder of the need for better preparation to mitigate the effects of pre-monsoon weather patterns, especially on critical infrastructure such as airports.
