Kathmandu, March 15, 2025 – As the world marks Consumer Rights Day, attention has turned to the critical role consumers play in driving sustainable development. In developing countries like Nepal, the choices individuals make in their daily lives significantly impact the environment and shape the future of the nation.
Nepal faces growing environmental challenges, including pollution, resource depletion, and improper waste management. Experts emphasize that embracing sustainable consumption practices is a crucial step toward addressing these issues. By choosing eco-friendly products, reducing waste, and conserving resources, individuals can contribute to creating a healthier and more resilient future.
The theme for this year's Consumer Rights Day focuses on promoting sustainable lifestyles, encouraging consumers to take small but impactful actions such as reducing plastic use, supporting local and sustainable businesses, and properly disposing of waste. These habits not only protect the environment but also ensure a better quality of life for future generations.
In this context, Mr. Karan Chaudhari, President of the Nepal Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA), highlighted the importance of a just transition to sustainable lifestyles through the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Issuing an official statement in Kathmandu, he stated, "Electric vehicles are not just a luxury; they are a necessity for achieving sustainable mobility in Nepal. By embracing EVs, we can reduce our dependency on fossil fuels, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and create a cleaner urban environment."
Mr. Chaudhari emphasized the need for policy support, infrastructure development, and public awareness to make EVs accessible and affordable for all segments of society. He urged consumers to consider electric mobility as a vital step toward building a sustainable future.
"Sustainable living is no longer an option—it’s a necessity," added Ms. Prabina Raut, an environmentalist. "Every small step, like reusing items, composting, or conserving water, contributes to building a cleaner and greener tomorrow. It’s about understanding that our individual choices have collective power."
Governments, organizations, and activists are urging consumers to be more conscious of their environmental impact. Campaigns have been launched nationwide to raise awareness about sustainable practices and their long-term benefits.
In Nepal, initiatives such as local recycling programs, clean-up campaigns, and sustainable marketplaces are gaining momentum. The promotion of electric vehicles aligns with these efforts, providing a practical solution for reducing carbon emissions while enhancing energy efficiency.
As Nepal continues to develop, balancing economic growth with environmental preservation is a challenge that requires collective effort. By celebrating Consumer Rights Day with a focus on sustainability, the nation takes a step forward in fostering a culture of responsibility and care for the planet.
This Consumer Rights Day, let us all pledge to make sustainable choices, including adopting electric vehicles, and contribute to a greener, cleaner future.
