Kathmandu, March 22, 2025 – Nepal celebrated World Water Day 2025 with the grand inauguration of the First National Water Conference (NFWC) 2025, held as a part of Nepal National Glacier, Water, and Weather Week 2025 (#NNGWWW2025). The event was organized in collaboration with the National Federation of Irrigation Water Users Association, Nepal, and chaired by the Water and Energy Commission Secretariat (WECS). With over 50 collaborators, the conference brought together policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders to address pressing water resource management and glacier preservation issues in the region.
The conference was graced by the presence of the Honorable Minister Mr. Deepak Khadka from the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation (MoEWRI), who served as the chief guest. Minister Khadka emphasized the critical importance of water resource management, early warning systems, and glacier preservation for Nepal’s sustainable development. "Nepal's water and glacier resources are vital for the region's ecological balance and livelihoods. Through collaborative efforts, we can ensure their preservation while enhancing water security," he stated in his inaugural speech.
The event marks a significant milestone in Nepal’s environmental and developmental agenda, focusing on global themes such as sustainable water use, the cryosphere, and climate resilience. Participants engaged in discussions on Nepal's role as a "water tower" of South Asia, glacier monitoring strategies, and strengthening early warning systems for climate-induced disasters.
This initiative aligns with the International Year of Glacier Preservation (#IYGP2025) and World Water Development Report (#WWDR) goals, showcasing Nepal’s commitment to addressing global and regional water-related challenges.
As the conference progresses, it promises actionable insights, innovative solutions, and collaborations to safeguard Nepal’s invaluable water and glacier resources ahead.
