Kathmandu, April 1, 2025 - A new review published in Oxford Open Climate Change has raised alarm over the devastating consequences of fossil fuel dependence, warning that the industry and its products are driving multiple interconnected crises that threaten humanity, wildlife, and the planet’s future.
The study, conducted by leading climate scientists, reveals that fossil fuels contribute to approximately 90% of human-induced carbon dioxide emissions, exacerbating global warming, ocean acidification, and ecological destruction. It further highlights the severe health impacts of air pollution caused by burning coal, oil, and gas, which leads to millions of premature deaths worldwide every year.
Beyond environmental and health consequences, the research emphasizes the role of fossil fuel industries in perpetuating social and environmental injustices. Vulnerable communities, particularly in the Global South, suffer disproportionate impacts, including displacement, water contamination, and extreme weather events. Additionally, biodiversity loss is accelerating due to habitat destruction and ecosystem imbalances driven by fossil fuel extraction and consumption.
The scientists behind the review are calling for an urgent global transition away from fossil fuels. Their recommendations include rapid investments in renewable energy, stronger climate policies, and an end to government subsidies that support fossil fuel industries.
This warning comes as global climate records continue to break. In 2024, the planet experienced its hottest year on record, intensifying concerns that climate change is progressing faster than previously anticipated. Meanwhile, legal challenges against new oil and gas projects, such as the UK's recent North Sea licensing expansion, highlight the growing public and political pressure to phase out fossil fuels.
The findings reaffirm the necessity of immediate action. Governments, businesses, and individuals must work collectively to shift toward sustainable energy solutions to mitigate climate change and safeguard the future of the planet.
