Kathmandu, April 11, 2025 – An excavation project undertaken by the Department of Heritage and Tourism has unearthed key historical structures of Bhairav Hiti, a centuries-old water spout system located at Gangahiti Marg in Ward No. 7 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. This significant discovery highlights Kathmandu’s rich cultural heritage and the urgent need for its preservation.
The site had remained buried beneath a two-story concrete building that had been constructed over it. The building, managed by a local neighborhood improvement committee, housed the committee's office on the upper floor and operated commercial units on the ground floor. Acting on reports from local residents and elected representatives, a joint inspection by the Department and ward representatives confirmed the encroachment.
Following coordination with the neighborhood committee, the concrete structure was dismantled to initiate the excavation. The Department entrusted the ward-level Sustainable Development Consumer Committee with the task of site clearance and excavation. The work commenced on Chaitra 10, 2081 BS (March 24, 2025), involving a team of 10 workers.
To date, the excavation has uncovered the main wall, locally known as the "Maappa," and a stone spout after digging approximately seven feet deep. Historical records indicate that Bhairav Hiti was originally constructed in the 18th century and underwent renovations in 1940 BS. The stone spout, as per these records, measures 25 feet 3 inches in length and 15 feet in width.
Archival documents from 2036 BS prepared by Kathmandu Metropolitan City provide further insights, noting the presence of farmland to the east and south of the spout, a pathway to the west, and additional farmland to the north during its original layout.
This excavation underscores the importance of preserving Kathmandu's heritage sites, many of which have faced encroachment and neglect over the years. Bhairav Hiti, like other historical water systems in the Valley, not only represents architectural ingenuity but also holds cultural and environmental significance.
Experts have called for continued research and conservation efforts to restore Bhairav Hiti to its former glory and ensure that such invaluable heritage sites are safeguarded for future generations.
Ecosphere News will continue to monitor and report on this vital preservation effort.
