Kathmandu, Nepal - Nepal has launched an ambitious initiative to combat plastic pollution in its rivers, with significant cleanup drives being conducted across the country. In one remarkable effort, over 24,575 kilograms of plastic waste were removed from the Sunkoshi River within 36 hours. This cleanup drive was part of the Project CAP (Collaborative Approach for Preventing Plastic Leakages in Rivers), under the larger PLEASE (Plastic Free Rivers and Seas of South Asia) initiative.
The campaign saw the participation of 134 individuals, including government officials, security personnel, NGOs, and local youth, highlighting the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges. Similarly, the Bagmati River witnessed notable efforts during the 11th River Clean-Up event in Kathmandu, which collected more than 2,380 kilograms of waste. This initiative was supported by organizations like Biocomp Nepal, People in Need Nepal, and CLEAN UP NEPAL, underlining the critical role of community involvement.
PET Recycling Industry Inauguration
To complement these cleanup efforts, Nepal has inaugurated a PET recycling industry dedicated to processing collected plastic waste. This facility focuses on recycling low-grade plastics and used beverage cartons, converting waste into reusable materials. The establishment of this recycling industry marks a significant milestone in Nepal’s journey toward sustainable waste management and reducing plastic pollution in its rivers.
Fostering Community Engagement
The success of these initiatives stems from the active involvement of local communities, especially young people, in environmental conservation efforts. By fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and awareness, Nepal is setting an example of how collective action can lead to meaningful change.
Looking Ahead
Nepal’s concerted efforts to make its rivers plastic-free demonstrate the effectiveness of coordinated actions between government bodies, NGOs, and local communities. These measures not only contribute to a cleaner environment but also set the foundation for sustainable development. The combination of river cleanup campaigns and the establishment of recycling facilities promises a brighter, greener future for Nepal’s waterways and ecosystems.
This bold initiative underscores Nepal’s commitment to tackling plastic pollution and inspires other nations to prioritize environmental conservation.
