Kathmandu, April 23, 2025 – A two-day workshop on “Fundamentals of Adaptive and Shock-Responsive Social Protection” concluded on Tuesday, aiming to enhance the effective implementation of the Disaster-Sensitive Social Security and Relief Distribution Standards, 2081.
The workshop was organized under the leadership of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), with technical support from the World Food Programme (WFP). Attendees included officials from local governments, provincial administrations, and federal ministries, focusing on social protection and disaster risk reduction and management.
Engineer Dinesh Bhatt, the Executive Chief of NDRRMA, inaugurated the event. In his opening remarks, he emphasized the critical role of adaptive social protection mechanisms in addressing disaster-induced vulnerabilities and ensuring equitable relief distribution.
The workshop covered various aspects of adaptive and shock-responsive social protection, equipping participants with tools and strategies to strengthen disaster preparedness and response. A key highlight was the commitment to decentralized implementation, with plans to extend similar workshops to provincial and local levels within the current fiscal year.
“This initiative underscores our dedication to fostering resilience in communities affected by disasters while enhancing the efficiency of social security mechanisms,” Bhatt stated.
The participants expressed optimism about the workshop's potential to bridge gaps in disaster risk management and social protection policies. The collaborative approach among local, provincial, and federal entities was hailed as a step forward in institutionalizing adaptive practices.
As disasters increasingly affect vulnerable populations, the need for a robust, responsive, and adaptive social protection framework remains urgent. The ongoing efforts aim to ensure timely and efficient support for those in need, aligning with national disaster management and social protection goals.
