Kathmandu, April 24, 2025 - In an effort to enhance climate resilience and disaster preparedness, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has initiated the "CREWS Early Warnings for All (EW4All) Accelerator for LDCs and SIDS Project" in Nepal. The program is a part of a global initiative aimed at supporting Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in building robust early warning systems.
As part of this initiative, a "Two Days National Training Workshop on Implementing the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) in Nepal" is being conducted on April 24–25, 2025, in Kathmandu. Organized by the WMO in collaboration with local and international partners, the workshop aims to enhance knowledge and awareness of CAP to standardize alert dissemination, improve system compatibility, and integrate new and existing technologies.
The training includes practical exercises to help participants understand the benefits of CAP, such as standardized messaging, improved situational awareness, and pattern detection. It also highlights resources like WMO’s Impact-Based Forecast and Warning Services (IBFWS) and tools such as the Severe Weather Information Centre (SWIC), which are crucial for strengthening Nepal’s preparedness for extreme weather, water, and climate events at both regional and global levels.
This workshop is a key component of the CREWS EW4All Accelerator project, which focuses on capacity-building for local institutions and fostering community-based approaches to enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of early warnings. By equipping communities with actionable information, the program aspires to mitigate the loss of life and property from climate-related hazards.
Nepal's geographical diversity and increasing exposure to climate variability make this initiative particularly significant. The collaboration underscores the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships in addressing global climate challenges, ensuring that every individual is protected by effective early warning systems by 2027.
The CREWS EW4All Accelerator project and the training workshop represent a collective global commitment to reducing disaster risks and advancing sustainable development for vulnerable nations like Nepal.
